Travel Tuesday: Steamboat Springs, CO

I’m back with another Travel Tuesday. It’s been a busy month for travel! Our spring break destination should come as no surprise. We love Steamboat and visit at least once per year, usually more. This visit was particularly fun because so many of our Greenville friends also made the trek to The Boat. Everywhere we went we ran into fellow SC peeps….shops, restaurants, chair lifts, etc.

I started my trip the same way I always do: with a trip to City Market. It’s a pain, but I enjoy knocking out the grocery run the same day we arrive. Our menu for the week consisted of pizza, lasagna (frozen), chicken noodle soup and chili.

If you didn’t already know, Steamboat is having a record setting season for snowfall. Our group monitored the weather closely for weeks and couldn’t wait to get out on the slopes. Mother Nature delivered and we woke to snow our first morning. A celebratory mimosa was in order.

Nothing like the first gondola ride of the trip!

Or that first dip in the hot tub!

The kids and a few of the adults skied every day. That’s a lot of skiing! Even though our legs were spent, we just couldn’t resist the perfect conditions.

Such hams. All of these boys are fifth graders at the same school as Bodie. How fun that they got to ski together!

We had some delicious food in Steamboat, but the only picture I took is of my turkey Reuben at Gondola Pub. I dream of this sandwich. It’s my all time favorite Steamboat treat. I highly recommend Gondola Pub for lunch if you’re looking for a place to eat in Gondola Square. It’s close enough to walk to in ski boots if you decide to come in off the hill.

Our other favorite lunch spots are Rendezvous (on the mountain…quick, easy and maximizes your time on the slopes) and T-Bar. T-Bar is a nondescript little building to the right as you’re coming down to the base. It’s easy to miss, but the food is out of this world. I regret not taking a picture, but the Rosti skillets are the perfect ski food. Hot, hearty, filling and flavorful. I could eat one every day.

For dinner, Truffle Pig is always a solid choice. The best thing on the menu is the burger with truffle fries. It’s huge, though. Ben and I split it. TP is super convenient because it’s in the same building as our condo, right in Gondola Square. If you’re not planning to sit at the bar, you’ll definitely want reservations.

For adult dinners, I suggest Laundry (downtown…will need to take a shuttle) and Cafe Diva (walkable from Gondola Square). Both have inventive menus, wonderful service and brilliant chefs. Diva is a tough reservation to get, so book as soon as you can. I didn’t have too much trouble making a reservation for our large group at Laundry, but I wouldn’t plan on just walking in.

Steamboat, thank you for showing our friends such a fabulous time. I love sharing this special place with friends!

Lest you think the trip was all rainbows and butterflies, think again. I was awakened by an alert from Delta the morning of our supposed departure indicating that our flight was cancelled and that we couldn’t be rebooked for days. That wasn’t really an option for us. We ended up staying one more night, renting a car, driving to Denver, connecting in Atlanta, and then experiencing insane weather delays followed by the scariest flight of my life. Thank goodness it’s only half an hour from Atlanta to Greenville. But all’s well that ends well! The kids were excited to have an extra day to ski, but they were less than thrilled about the 3+ hour drive to Denver with all of our ski gear.
