Travel Tuesday: The Sanctuary at Kiawah

Our little foursome headed to the beach last weekend for a last minute, spur of the moment getaway before school starts (more on that in a minute).  Kiawah is only three and a half hours from Greenville, which makes it the perfect destination for a weekend away.  We splurged and stayed at The Sanctuary and it was worth every penny.  The hotel is gorgeous and the service was wonderful.

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island

First order of business?  The beach!  We spent Friday playing in the surf and lounging under an umbrella.  I can’t think of a better way to kick off the weekend.

Saturday morning we headed out bright and early for some fishing!  Bodie fell in love with fishing while we were in Michigan several weeks ago, so this was a must do.  So.much.fun.  Funny enough, the only thing we caught were sharks!  I think it was five or six Bonnet head sharks total.  The kids were in heaven.  Emery even reeled in a twenty three pounder.  She kissed her sharks before releasing them.

Fishing Excursion

Our captain, Harry, was wonderful!  His company is Drum Runner Charters and his boat is kept at Bohicket Marina, which is perfect for Kiawah guests.

We went straight from fishing to surfing!  Emery and Bodie fell in love with surfing at Rosemary Beach several years ago and it’s on the top of their list every time we go to the beach.

Surf Lesson

We used Tidal Trails for the surf lesson.  Lucas was a great instructor.  I definitely recommend if you’re looking to catch some waves during your stay.

Our weekend concluded with the beginning of SHARK WEEK!!!!!  Of course the Shark Week Fairy (aka:  me) found Emery and Bodie at Kiawah and left little goodies for them.  The Freestyle watches and shark bath bombs (ordered on Etsy) were a big hit.

It’s my favorite week of the year and the perfect way to close out summer.  Emery begins school next Monday.  She is so ready to see all of her friends and be back in a classroom again.  Unfortunately, Bodie doesn’t begin until August 24th and he’ll only be attending one day per week.  This is not what we wanted, but it is what it is.  I just hope it’s not like this for too long.  In the meantime, he’s enjoying his endless summer….
