Travel Tuesday: Grand Haven, MI

Good morning and happy Tuesday!  I gotta say, I really didn’t think I’d be writing a Travel Tuesday post anytime soon, but we bit the bullet last week and headed up to hubby’s home town of Grand Haven, Michigan, to visit family and get a break from the Greenville heat.  Boy, am I glad we did!  So, this isn’t your usual Travel Tuesday post with hotel and restaurant suggestions, but it is full of happy pictures and gorgeous Lake Michigan sunsets.

I know many people have strong opinions about air travel these days, but we chose to fly to MI after doing plenty of research.  We flew Delta and had a great experience.  Masks are required, everything is super sanitized between flights, the planes are only at 60% capacity (which means the gates and airports in general are not very crowded), and plenty of hand sanitizing products (wipes and gels) are readily available.  Masks are also required in each airport.  We felt very safe.  Truthfully, I’ve felt more vulnerable in Wal Mart.  So, there you have it.  I’d totally fly again.  On Delta.  Apparently each airline has its own rules.

Grand Haven is an adorable town right on the shores of Lake Michigan.  Boating and outdoor activities are a way of life and my children absolutely adore this visit each summer.  Our first stop:  meeting up with the cousins at Grandma and Grandpa’s old cottage property for lots of fishing and riding around on dune buggies.  Bodie caught a huge bass with the help of his uncle Scott!

One of my favorite things to do in Grand Haven is to go for a run.  The cooler temperatures and flat landscape are such a treat after running in hot and hilly Greenville.  I ran more miles on vacation than I have in the past month!  I snapped this photo of my in-laws’ house at the end of my run one morning.  I love their house.  It’s over one hundred years old!

My in-laws have a fabulous Sea Ray that we get to enjoy every summer.  Our plan is almost always to motor up the coast to Muskegon for dinner, which is exactly what we did this trip.  We were treated to a cool view of the draw bridge in town being raised to allow for a tall ship on our way out.  We chose to eat at a restaurant called The Deck, which was delicious and fun.  I didn’t take any pictures, but the restaurant has lots of sand volleyball courts outside and a delicious menu.  Oh, and we had to take the dinghy from our boat to and from shore, which was super fun for the kids.  They all took turns driving.

On our way back to Grand Haven we were treated to one of the most spectacular sunsets I’ve ever seen.

For our final night in Grand Haven, we went to my in-laws’ country club for a wonderful meal.  Thanks to social distancing guidelines, we felt as though we had the place to ourselves.  The sweeping views of the golf course were stunning and, of course, the temperatures were perfect.  We let the kids sit at their own table while the adults enjoyed some nice wine and conversation.  It was heavenly.

Our trip came to an end much too quickly, but these memories will sustain us until we can all be together again!  I am incredibly thankful to have such wonderful family on both sides.  At the end of the day, family is the most important part of our lives.
