Travel Tuesday: Field Trip to Chattanooga, TN

This is not my usual Travel Tuesday! Last week I had the privilege of chaperoning Bodie’s field trip to Chattanooga, TN. I was paired up with my good friend, Carrie, and her son. Together we had a group of seven boys and five girls. Whew! Keeping track of a dozen seventh graders is tricky, but our herd of kids was pretty good.

Orange Sky Travel is the company that orchestrated our trip and they did a wonderful job. Between both my kids, this is the third field trip I’ve chaperoned with them. Each one was been fabulous. The guides are knowledgeable, the buses are clean, and the meals and excursions are well organized. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites downtown and I was very impressed. The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable, the showers were great and the breakfast buffet was delicious. I’d stay there again.

I took a screenshot of our itinerary each morning so I could easily reference it without having to pull up the GroupMe. Our days were FULL!

I hadn’t been to Chattanooga in ages, so I was excited to go back. I remember loving the aquarium when I was young. Good news: it’s still great. However, I hadn’t had a reason to go back since the Georgia Aquarium opened. I will say that the Georgia Aquarium is bigger and appeals to me more, but the Tennessee Aquarium holds its own. The IMAX theater was very cool. Side note: I didn’t take a single photo at Chickamauga because I was so cold I never took my hands out of my pockets. I learned a lot, but I don’t think Bodie is particularly interested in Civil War history.

Our final stop of the night was High Point climbing and this was a huge hit with the kids. They all loved it. We had to drag them out of there at 9:30.

We all slept great!

Day two started bright and early.

I was thankful for the sun, but the temps were frigid the entire trip. Thankfully, Ruby Falls is consistently around 60 degrees year round, or so I’m told. I really enjoyed learning about Ruby Falls. I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t know much about this natural wonder.

I need to go back to Rock City when it’s not 24 degrees and windy. We were miserably cold and kind of rushed through the sights in order to get out of the elements as quickly as possible. However, seeing seven states from one spot is pretty surreal.

We made one last stop at Lookout Mountain to see the monument dedicated to the Battle Above the Clouds. Lookout Mountain and Point Park are really pretty.

We rolled back into town at 9:15. All in all, the field trip was a smashing success and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to tag along on these school trips.
