Raising an almost thirteen year old girl is no easy task. Multiple times per day I am struck with worry and fear…there’s no shortage of things to be concerned about, that’s for certain! Am I raising her to be respectful? Is she a good friend? Is she where she needs to be academically? Who has access to her social media? The list goes on and on. Adding to my anxiety is the dreaded teenage attitude that rears its ugly head on a regular basis.
Thankfully, squeezed in between all of the angst, Emery and I have made some wonderful memories lately and I’m reminded just how lucky I am to have her as my daughter. First up, she attended her second spring cotillion last weekend. We had a fabulous afternoon shopping and getting dolled up at Ulta and then meeting up with her sweet friends for photos.

The ladies stunned in their vibrant dresses! The gents cleaned up nicely in their tuxedos. Emery’s dress color is “papaya” and it’s my new favorite color. I can’t get enough!

Emery and I had another opportunity to dress up the very next weekend when my dear friend, and mom to one of Em’s dear friends, tied the knot! The wedding was a small affair, but big on fun. Emery got to spend time with friends that all go to different middle schools now, which was a rare treat. After the reception, Emery and I went to CVS to buy face masks and then headed home to watch the latest in the “Scream” movie franchise. It was the perfect night.
As the best friend of the bride reminded us in her toast, “sisters before misters!” The big smiles and non-stop laughter made my mom heart so happy.

Joining National Charity League (volunteer organization for moms and daughters) last year still ranks as one of the best decisions I’ve made. Not only is Emery learning a lot about philanthropy and, hopefully, becoming more aware of just how fortunate she is to have her health and a roof over her head, it’s great for mother-daughter bonding. Although we work hard in NCL, we also play hard while supporting small businesses in our little city. NCL hosted a mini meeting at Buff City Soap Sunday afternoon and now I’m obsessed with their products. Emery and I got to make bath bombs and had so much fun choosing our scents and colors and then mixing and molding the concoction. Buff City Soap started in Tennessee several years ago and is now in the Carolinas and Georgia as well. If you’re near one, check it out! I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to spend so much time with just my girl lately. I cherish my time with Bodie, too, but as Emery gets older I worry she’ll need me less and less.

I miss the toddler days. I never thought I’d say those words, but I really do. However, spending time with your almost teen is incredibly rewarding. Now, pray for me as I continue to navigate these waters. I’m definitely praying for y’all!
