Spring/Summer Wardrobe Basics

I’m still on a capsule-ish wardrobe kick. I purchased some basics during winter and it made dressing for day-to-day a breeze. Packing for trips is a breeze. I’m excited to implement more of the same as the temps consistently rise. I’m breaking this into two posts: one dressy and one casual. The casual includes tried and true swimsuits. Much like my ideal winter wardrobe, this color palette is neutral with lots of black and white. Natural fabrics and pieces that will not look dated by next year are the goals.

My dressy options are not ultra dressy…think date night dinners, church, brunch and social gatherings that do not require a strict dress code. I rarely have the occasion to dress for a cocktail party or formal, so this is about as dressy as I get most of the time.

I love a midi or maxi dress length. I think long dresses are more flattering on me, plus I hate the feeling of the back of my legs touching the chair in a restaurant or, God forbid, an Uber. Yes, I’m aware this isn’t normal. However, I’ve learned over the years that I just do not have as much fun when I go out in a short dress as I do a long dress.

I tried to keep prices in check. Most of the items are quite reasonable, but I couldn’t resist two dresses that are on the pricier side. I have admired Oliphant designs for years, but have yet to pull the trigger. This black and ivory design with the smoked top and long skirt will be my first Oliphant purchase. Yes, it’s expensive. But it will never go out of style. Dressed up or down, this is extremely versatile. Shop it here: https://oliphantdesign.com/products/1141p4sambablack

Stay with me because the options will be more wallet friendly after this, but I had to include this gingham dress by Celia B. One of my most cherished dresses is a Celia B. design and I’ve wanted to add another piece to my closet for years. This print is the straw that broke the camel’s back. It’s available here: https://celiab.com/products/rs25-cb-d19

The use of ric rac is my favorite element of Celia B. dresses, so I was thrilled to find this dress at Nordstrom. It has a similar vibe, but is less expensive. About 1/3 the price. I can’t decide between black and ivory for the main color. Check it out here: https://www.nordstrom.com/s/yana-sleeveless-maxi-dress/7753823

Black or Cream Ric Rac Dress

This black and white floral dress is anything but basic. I love the cut and the print. Dressed up it’s the perfect dress for a special occasion, but is relaxed enough for casual events, too. Click here: https://www.nordstrom.com/s/angelique-floral-strapless-pleated-maxi-dress/7754301

Black and White Floral Dress

Another strapless option, but in a solid color…this is a winner! A denim jacket or lightweight scarf will make this work in chilly air conditioned spaces or to extend the life of this dress from spring until fall. It’s a great price and a true staple. I think I like it in black best, although one could certainly make a case for white. Shop it here: https://www.nordstrom.com/s/kayt-strapless-linen-blend-maxi-sundress/8036715

Strapless Linen Dress

I found the perfect sandal to go with all of these dresses. They’re flats, so perfect for wearing all day. However, the wrap and crossover strap elevates the design. Since they’re by Margaux, you know the leather and craftsmanship are excellent quality. Black works best here, but all of the colors are gorgeous.
