Service Project Idea: Blessing Bags

Several of my best girlfriends and I brainstormed a few weeks ago to come up with a way for our children to give back. We landed on the idea of assembling blessing bags during the football games last Sunday. To prepare, we purchased socks, wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bottled waters, granola bars and beef jerky. Tampons went in about half of the bags. I bought my contributions at Wal Mart, but Costco or Sam’s would have been a better option. I think we spent around $500 to assemble 60 bags, which was split between the families that participated. Each bag also included a handwritten note. The plan is to keep a few in my car to hand out when we see someone in need. One of my friends who helped out Sunday has already given some out. I love the thought of being a bright spot in someone’s day and hopefully provide a little comfort and encouragement.

Blessing Bags

This was a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon and the perfect excuse to have friends over. We snacked and enjoyed football and just being together. The kids who helped range in age from eight to fifteen. I love that this project is something for all ages.

Happy Friday and happy Groundhog Day!
