Secret Sister Gifts

I’m just going to go ahead and say it: the secret sister gift exchange situation happening on girls’ sports teams causes me more stress than joy. Which is a problem. I realized a little bit of planning would help immensely and I’m embarrassed it’s taken me several seasons of multiple sports to come up with a solution.

But first, for those of you who might be wondering what on earth I’m talking about, secret sisters are randomly assigned at the beginning of a season. Usually the girls fill out a short form indicating their favorite candies, snacks and drinks. The teammates are NOT to reveal their identity to their secret sister (or any of the other girls, really) and are supposed to gift the sister with a little gift on designated days (home games, away games, tournament games…this can vary). I’m not sure how each team handles the gifting in secret. In middle school I believe Emery slipped the goodies into the locker room locker of her secret sister. For high school tennis, she must have the gift in a designated office by second period.

Back to my solution…and this is so simple I don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner. I looked at the schedule and determined the number of games Emery needs to procure a gift. Then, I took her secret sister’s list to Wal Mart and stocked up on her favorites in bulk. In my gift wrapping area, I’ve got a case of Dr. Pepper, bags of Cheez Its and lots of Twix bars and Kit Kats. I also bought a bunch of cute gift bags and hot pink tissue paper. Now, all I have to do the night before a game is assemble a bag. Let’s be real, this often happens in the morning as we’re rushing out the door.

Emery wanted to mix things up a bit for her sister since the tennis season has so many matches. She was a little tired of gifting the same things over and over. So, we perused my inventory and came up with a fun little surcee for her sister: a Mint button bag with the school mascot.
