Happy Wednesday! Last Sunday we hosted our spring break crew for dinner and my brilliant friend, Diana, orchestrated the most delicious and fun activity: a blind taste test of various pimento cheese spreads. Bodie and I LOVE pimento cheese. It’s best on pretzel crisps, but we also enjoy it on Hawaiian rolls, bagels, burgers, turkey sandwiches….you name it! I am a die hard Palmetto Cheese fan, particularly their jalapeno pimento cheese option. Diana mentioned that she’d found something even better, to which I responded, “not possible.” In an effort to prove me wrong, she created the taste test.
The format is pretty simple: scoop different brands of pimento cheese into lettered ramekins and choose a favorite. We did not know the options ahead of time, but here’s what Diana provided: My Three Sons (Emmy’s Original), Taste of the South (lowcountry) and Palmetto Cheese (original).
Pimento Cheese Varieties
Team Slagel immediately identified our tried and true favorite, Palmetto, as option C. Almost identical in taste and looks is Taste of the South (option B). Option A is the My Three Sons brand. Although good, it was only one taste tester’s favorite. So, Palmetto is the winner at my house. But, the waters muddied a bit when Diana informed us that her TRUE favorite is My Three Sons’ WHITE cheddar variety. However, Diana worried that the slightly different color and texture would prevent us from choosing our favorite based solely on taste. Blindfolds next time!
I dropped Bodie off at a friend’s house yesterday and his mama set out a plate of pimento cheese and crackers. Lo and behold, it was the My Three Sons white cheddar kind! Diana is correct: this stuff is LEGIT. The amount of spice is just right and the flavor is divine.
I’ve had a few non local friends ask where to buy these phenomenal cheeses and I’m not sure if it’s a regional thing. In Greenville, we can get Palmetto and My Three Sons at Publix. Taste of the South is sold at Costco. I believe Whole Foods sells My Three Sons as well. Some Wal-Mart locations in Greenville sell Palmetto, but I’m not sure if all of them do. Taste of the South is actually a Duke Foods brand!
Fortunately, Palmetto Cheese ships! I suggest a four pack consisting of two originals and two jalapenos. https://palmettocheese.goldbelly.com/
I think all of these are best when these are used as a vessel: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001RIXSNK/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001RIXSNK&linkCode=as2&tag=emerybodie-20&linkId=aee1bd609e45bea00bf0e865e9cd5dea
I could not find shipping information for My Three Sons, but I did check the “where to buy” section on their web site and am pleasantly surprised by how many states have these dips available. https://www.mtsgourmet.com/where-to-buy
I hope this helps! Several comments on my Instagram post on this topic asked for purchasing information. I’m about to crack open a tub right now…with a glass of wine! Cheers!
