Mahjong: I Get the Hype

Last week I played my first ever game of Mahjong and that’s all it took: I am hooked. To be honest, it’s not as confusing as I feared. Not that it’s very similar, but we play a lot of euchre and rummikub in my family. Despite the differences, I think a basic understanding of cards (suits, runs, etc.) is helpful when learning any new game.

Several of my very sweet and patient Book B*tches offered to teach those of us who wanted to learn. I completely understand why Mahjong is having a moment. It’s such a cozy and CONNECTED way to spend free time. Also? It’s so pretty! My friends have gorgeous tables.

All of the photos I’ve shared thus far feature tiles from Oh My Mahjong. I’d have to say they are the gold standard when it comes to tile sets. I didn’t realize until I started looking for a set of my own that the tricolor tiles are not the norm; most are much thinner and only one or two color. Of course I played around on the web site and filled a cart, but I just couldn’t pull the trigger. But how gorgeous is this Pearlescent Starter Kit? https://go.shopmy.us/p-39665674

These colors are STUNNING! I’m also tempted by the Emerald Starter Kit. How does one ever decide??? They’re all so pretty, but Oh My Mahjong sets are definitely an investment. I tried to choose color ways that don’t look overly summery. Emerald is linked here: https://go.shopmy.us/p-39667213. Which would you choose? Regardless of the tiles, I think the Mirage and Esme mats, which come with the Pearlescent and Emerald kits, are the best for my home decor.

I came to my senses and ended up purchasing a cobbled together set on Amazon. It’s not as striking as Oh My Mahjong, but I think it’s really pretty and I can’t wait for it to arrive…just in time for the winter weather that is supposed to hit South Carolina this weekend. Shufflers are not a Mahjong necessity, but I couldn’t resist these happy colors and helpful hints. I need all the reminders when playing.

My friends and I still play with 2025 cards, but 2026 cards are available for preorder. If you need some 2025 cards to tide you over, look no further.

If you’re ready to purchase a 2026 card, this is what I purchased…

I cannot convey how much restraint I demonstrated when purchasing the Amazon Mahjong set because as much as I love the Oh My Mahjong merchandise, I love the Chalet Kit in frosty lilac from Bespoke Mahjong even more. Have you even seen cuter tiles? See why I love them so much here:

This set would be darling to keep at your chalet? First I need a chalet. And to become a better Mahjong player. In the meantime, my Amazon set will serve me well. I can’t wait to play again!

Dot Crack Bam! Happy clicking!
