Happy President’s Day! This seems like a good day to highlight one of my favorite volunteer organizations. Back in 2007 when I first moved to South Carolina, I joined the Junior League of Greenville. If I’m being honest, my motivation was to meet people and learn about my new hometown. I was successful on both fronts. I met one of my dearest friends that very first year. However, I quickly realized how vital the JLG is to the Upstate and how phenomenal the members are.
I was very active in JLG for many years…I sat on the board, chaired a committee…all the things. And I loved it. But then my kids started school and PTA took over. Now that Emery and Bodie are high school and middle school students and Emery can drive, I suddenly have more free time. I decided to dip my toe back in the JLG waters as a Sustainer. My first event back in October was rescheduled due to Helene, which resulted in my hosting three meetings at my house within one month. Baptism by fire! Two were socials; one for transfers and one for sustainers. The third was an actual General Membership Meeting, which I got to observe. I am so excited to spend time with this organization again. I loved learning about the new ways in which the JLG is supporting the community, especially vulnerable populations.
If you’re not familiar with JLG, below are their statements:
Mission Statement
The Junior League of Greenville, Inc. is an organization of women whose mission is to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training.
Reaching Out Statement
The Junior League of Greenville, Inc. reaches out to women of all races, religions and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism.
Vision Statement
The Junior League of Greenville, Inc. is committed to building a safe, healthy, nurturing community.
Focus Statement
The Junior League of Greenville, Inc. engages in initiatives that help women in our community overcome barriers, focusing on human trafficking and economic mobility.
It’s hard not to love an organization with those values, right?
I love hosting gatherings in my home and these meetings were a fun excuse to pull out my high top tables and order from my favorite local catering spots: Good to Go Greenville and Grazeland. If you’re in the area and need to feed a crowd, I can’t say enough good things about both of these businesses.
