I probably need to turn in my southern card, but I’d never made fried green tomatoes until this past weekend. I love fried green tomatoes, but it honestly never occurred to me to make them at home. However, our abundance of tomatoes in our garden this summer has me making all things tomato, so I gave it shot. Guess what? It’s not nearly as intimidating as I feared!

I used this recipe from Allrecipes: https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/16760/best-fried-green-tomatoes/
Ingredients
Ingredient Checklist
- 4 large green tomatoes
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup milk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cornmeal
- ½ cup bread crumbs
- 2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 quart vegetable oil for frying
Directions
Instructions Checklist
- Step 1 Slice tomatoes 1/2 inch thick. Discard the ends.
- Step 2 Whisk eggs and milk together in a medium-size bowl. Scoop flour onto a plate. Mix cornmeal, bread crumbs and salt and pepper on another plate. Dip tomatoes into flour to coat. Then dip the tomatoes into milk and egg mixture. Dredge in breadcrumbs to completely coat.
- Step 3 In a large skillet, pour vegetable oil (enough so that there is 1/2 inch of oil in the pan) and heat over a medium heat. Place tomatoes into the frying pan in batches of 4 or 5, depending on the size of your skillet. Do not crowd the tomatoes, they should not touch each other. When the tomatoes are browned, flip and fry them on the other side. Drain them on paper towels.
Editor’s Note:
We have determined the nutritional value of oil for frying based on a retention value of 10% after cooking. The exact amount may vary depending on cook time and temperature, ingredient density, and the specific type of oil used.

Fried Green Tomatoes

Our jalapeno plants had a few peppers remaining, so we threw them in the oil with the tomatoes. They were good! Then Bodie got inspired and decided to fry up some pickles and cheese sticks, too. Not our healthiest dinner, for sure.
Fry Fest

I think it’s safe to say that anything tastes good fried, right?
To be perfectly honest, I felt like the peppers had the best flavor. I might add some red pepper to the tomatoes and pickles next time. Please feel free to share any tips or tricks not mentioned in the recipe I posted.
*I used store bought Remoulade sauce and ranch for our dipping options.
