I rejoined the tennis world last summer after many years on the sideline. I’ve never played seriously, but even that took a backseat to PTA and kid Ubering. I felt like I was always scrambling to practice or attend matches. I chose to focus on quick workouts I can do rain or shine and by myself: the treadmill, a run, classes at the gym, etc. However, now that my kids are high school and middle school ages and Emery is driving, I suddenly have more free time. I missed tennis and decided to dip my toe back into the tennis scene at our club. NO REGRETS.
My teammates and I have gotten into a fun rhythm this summer of playing Saturday mornings and then heading down to the pool for lunch. Travel has impacted this several weeks, but overall we have a standing game Saturdays. It’s been one of my favorite parts of this season.

Our club does a fantastic job hosting ladies tennis socials. The Wimbledon social is my favorite! The dress code is all white and we sip on Pimms while playing with wooden racquets for the finale. It’s so well done.

The combo season is just kicking off and the tri level season is ending. I’m excited to have two matches this week…the last full week of our summer break.
I’m inspired every day by the number of senior ladies who play tennis–and play well! Tennis is a lifelong sport with many health benefits. An opponent told me last season that tennis players live an average of seven years longer than non-tennis players. I have no idea if this is accurate, but I wouldn’t be surprised. Here’s why:
Physical Benefits of Tennis
- Tennis is excellent cardio
- It’s a full body workout
- Tennis is a weight bearing activity, which means it’s good for bone density (very important for us ladies)
- Quick movements and direction changes are good for balance and coordination
Mental Benefits of Tennis
- Physical activity relieves stress and improves sleep quality
- It’s a social setting that promotes interaction and improves one’s mood
- Enhances cognitive functioning thanks to the strategic planning and quick decision making involved
Hubs plays, too. He’s a better player than me, but we work well together in mixed doubles. I am thankful Emery enjoys tennis as well. Here’s hoping I can get Bodie on board!
Exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise is the best kind.
