Book B*tches: Look Closer by David Ellis

I am not exaggerating when I say this is one of the best books I have read in years. The writing style, setting, subject matter and character development are all right up my alley. My fellow Book B*tches loved it as well. We had a great time meeting at my house this week to discuss.

Look Closer

I started the book during our ski trip and finished it within a few days. Jet lag had me staying up late once we got back to SC. I spent those hours devouring Look Closer.

Amazon’s description:

“Wildly entertaining.”–New York Times Book Review

From the bestselling and award-winning author comes a wickedly clever and fast-paced novel of greed, revenge, obsession—and quite possibly the perfect murder.

Simon and Vicky couldn’t seem more normal: a wealthy Chicago couple, he a respected law professor, she an advocate for domestic violence victims. A stable, if unexciting marriage. But one thing’s for sure … absolutely nothing is what it seems. The pair are far from normal, and one of them just may be a killer. When the body of a beautiful socialite is found hanging in a mansion in a nearby suburb, Simon and Vicky’s secrets begin to unravel. A secret whirlwind affair. A twenty-million-dollar trust fund about to come due. A decades-long grudge and obsession with revenge. These are just a few of the lies that make up the complex web…and they will have devastating consequences. And while both Vicky and Simon are liars, just who exactly is conning who? Part Gone Girl, part Strangers on a Train, Look Closer is a wild rollercoaster of a read that will have you questioning everything you think you know.

I couldn’t find this novel at Barnes and Noble, but it’s available on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/40zKoqe

The Book B*tches hostess usually tries to serve food that is somehow tied to the book. The only food mentioned in Look Closer is from a restaurant called Viva Mediterranea. With the chaos of coming home from Colorado a day and a half later than planned and being thrust into a busy week, I ordered Greek takeout for our book club dinner. Easiest hosting gig ever!

The meat of the story takes place on Halloween night, so I decorated with some of my favorite spooky accents and served candy in a trick or treat bowl for dessert. It’s the company that makes Book B*tches so special, not the food.

Book Club Table

I’m eager to read more by David Ellis. His law background is impressive, which shows in this novel.

The first week after spring break was a doozy. Thank goodness it’s Friday. We have lots of basketball on the agenda, which is fine by me. When not watching the kids’ teams, we’ll be watching the NCAA tourney. Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Do you have a list of your discussion questions? I have a book club tonight for this book and can’t find any online! 🙂

    1. I know I had a list of questions, but for the life of me I cannot find them. I only remember discussing who we would cast as each character if this were a movie, but I know we talked about more than that. I can tell you that our dinner this evening was Mediterranean, based off the restaurant Simon frequented. I looked as well and cannot find anything online. I’ll keep checking!
